Yes. AVIF Tools works in modern mobile browsers on iPhone and Android. You can upload images from your device's photo library and download the converted files directly to your device.

Privacy & File Handling

Yes. Image conversion requires processing on a server. When you upload an image, it is transferred to and processed on our servers located in France, within the European Union.

Your files are handled exclusively for the purpose of performing the conversion and are deleted automatically after a short period.

Your original uploaded images are deleted immediately from our servers once the conversion is complete. We do not retain them.

Converted files are kept temporarily so you can download them. They are automatically deleted after 1 hour. Download your converted files before then.

AVIF Tools preserves EXIF metadata when it is present in the source image. This includes information such as date and time, camera settings and, where present, GPS location data.

Note: EXIF is one type of metadata. Other metadata types (XMP, IPTC, ICC profiles) may or may not be preserved depending on the source format and conversion settings.

All communication between your browser and our servers uses HTTPS encryption. Uploaded files are processed in isolated temporary storage and deleted automatically - originals immediately after conversion, converted files after 1 hour.

AVIF Tools is checked by Norton Safe Web, Sucuri SiteCheck and Google Safe Browsing. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

About AVIF

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format that uses AV1 image compression technology. It was developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) and is designed for efficient web image delivery. AVIF supports lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency, HDR and wide color gamut.

For a full technical overview, see the AVIF format guide.

AVIF supports both lossy and lossless compression. Lossless AVIF preserves the pixel data of the image being encoded, while lossy AVIF reduces file size by discarding some image information.

AVIF can produce smaller files than JPEG or WebP for many images, but results depend on the source image, encoder and quality settings. AVIF may be smaller, similar in size or larger depending on the specific image and how it is encoded.

See real AVIF conversion results for measured examples using actual images.

Yes. AVIF supports alpha channel transparency, making it suitable for logos, icons, UI elements and other graphics with transparent backgrounds. See transparent image examples on the samples page.

Yes. The AVIF format can store EXIF metadata including camera settings, date and time, and GPS location data. Whether EXIF is preserved during a specific conversion depends on the tool used. AVIF Tools preserves EXIF metadata when it is present in the source image.

AVIF is supported by current versions of all major browsers, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera. Older browser versions may not support AVIF and may require a fallback format.

For current browser compatibility data, see Can I Use - AVIF. For a detailed version-by-version breakdown, see the AVIF browser support table.
